Overview
Enterprise holds more than 75,000 technical documents, including manuals that run up to 6,000 pages, SAP exports, and scanned drawings. Engineers needed answers from all of it in seconds, scoped to what each team is allowed to see, and verifiable enough to act on safely.
The challenge
Dense retrieval alone topped out at 65 to 75%. Engineers search in shorthand like 'PID', which embeddings don't link to 'Piping and Instrumentation Diagram', and generic parsers flattened tables and lost section hierarchy. A wrong answer could become a safety problem.
Our approach
We paired hybrid dense and sparse retrieval with index-time synonym expansion, built layout-aware ingestion that keeps tables and structure intact, and bound every answer to its source chunks so each response opens to the exact page and paragraph.

Multi-parser extraction keeps tables and section hierarchy intact across PDFs, Office files, and SAP exports, with 90%+ of documents parsed into usable structure.
Hybrid retrieval
Dense and sparse retrieval with synonym expansion lifts the top-k hit rate from the 65 to 75% range up to 90%+ on an SME-built evaluation set.
Citation-grounded answers
Every response shows its source chunks, scoped to the user's authorized knowledge bases, with under 2 seconds P95 latency in production.
